2019 Sydney Chinese New Year Lantern Artists EOI

Seeking 2019 Sydney Chinese New Year Lantern Artists.

The selected lantern concepts will be used to create large scale, three dimensional outdoor lanterns that will be illuminated in the evening.

City of Sydney is seeking concepts from artists and creatives for outdoor contemporary lantern installations that represent the Pig and/or Sheep zodiacs for the 2019 Lunar Lantern exhibition, which will be showcased as part of the Sydney Chinese New Year Festival. It is anticipated that the Lunar Lanterns will be concentrated around the Circular Quay foreshore.

The Sydney Chinese New Year Festival is a celebration of the Lunar New Year. The 2019 festival will celebrate the Year of the Pig. The City will be producing several events as part of the festival including the Lunar Lanterns exhibition, Dragon Boat Races and an exciting program including more than 80 associated events celebrating the Lunar New Year.

The City of Sydney will work with artists and manufacturers to bring concepts to life.

Your artist concept of the Lantern should:

  • Reflect the Pig or Sheep Lunar Zodiac sign and its characteristics

  • Be a contemporary artistic interpretation rather than a traditional style outdoor lantern

  • Draw inspiration from one of the cultures that celebrate the Lunar New Year

  • Have both daytime and night time appeal

  • Be innovative in their use of public space (for example, lanterns could be designed to suspend overhead, or be life in repetition on the ground, integrated onto the exterior of a building, or ground based but 15 mtrs high)

  • Be highly accessible and appeal to a broad audience as found in high profile, heavily trafficked locations within the Sydney CBD

  • Demonstrate artistic excellence, innovation and a creative approach

  • Engage and interact with the audience

  • Show how the appearance of the lantern can be changed for display in future years e.g., additional items added, changes to exterior appearance, reconfiguration, etc.

  • Indicate how the lantern can change to be refreshed each year it is displayed.
